It’s Not Your Fault That You’re Fat

Removing the blame from gaining excess weight due to overeating or emotional eating binges may sound good in the short run, but what do you do when reality sets back in?

If it’s only a few pounds and you’re disciplined enough to stick to an eating plan for a couple of months, you can blame your weight gain on the holidays, or breaking up with your lover, or short-term stress.

You hit the gym a couple of times a week, get back on track and no real harm done. In a few weeks, your weight returns to normal in a seamless transition, and life goes on.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case for millions of people who substitute food for affection, companionship, and love. Eating in order to avoid facing your fears is a symptom of a deeper issue.

Blame is not the concern here. Responsibility is what counts. No matter who or what got you into the mess that caused you to gain thirty pounds, or however much you gained, the only one who can change your situation is you.

If you’re ready to accept responsibility for making the changes in your life, then you should also know that your reality is the only one that matters.

It isn’t your fault because no judgment is necessary. You can assess your situation without judging yourself or blaming yourself for being weak. We are what we are, and that can change at any time.

We change when we experience something that makes us see the world and ourselves differently than we did before we had this new information. We can aid this process with affirmations that help put new ideas into our hearts.

Whatever happens, whatever you choose, responsibility grows on you. Feeling in charge of your life gives you a greater sense of freedom, which seems to become enhanced as we are willing and able to take on greater responsibility for our being.

Happy New Year! Let’s Lose Some Weight!

Well, here we are once again, standing on the edge of a brand new year. This is the time when people make their list of New Year’s resolutions and hope to heck they can keep at least one of them.

According to usa.gov, the resolution that tops the list of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is “Lose Weight”. But did we really need a survey to tell us that?

In the multibillion dollar weight loss industry there is probably a plan for everyone. The hard part is finding the one that will work for you.

There are many people who would like to drop a few pounds. Some will talk about it and wish for it, and some will actually do it. There is a lot of trial and error involved in weight loss, which is what makes it so frustrating.

We see ads and commercials every day that tell us, “If I can do it, anybody can do it” but that isn’t necessarily true, is it. After all, we are individuals whose bodies do not all respond in like ways to all foods and weight loss treatments.

There is one thing, however, that works for everyone. When you have had a problem with overeating, binging or food addiction, chances are good that you have a lot of buildup in your colon.

When we consume more food than the body can digest, more energy than it can burn, the result is the storage of fat. But that’s not all that happens.

We have internal plumbing in the form of intestines. Those drain pipes get pretty slimed up as we stuff ourselves with cheeses, chips, sweets, pasta, dairy and who  knows what else.

Water, fresh fruit and vegetables help to clean out some of the buildup but sometimes that’s not enough.

The large bowel, or colon, holds the key to to your energy and good health. If you have low energy, gas and bloating, indigestion, irregularity or acid reflux, you may need to check your plumbing.

The best weight loss results start with cleaning out the colon. Once the pipes are unclogged, things will flow more smoothly, your health will return and losing weight will be easier.

Obesity Levels Rising

Even though not every food addict or emotional eater is obese, these CDC statistics give an idea of how obesity levels have soared throughout the country in the last 20 years. I can’t help but wonder if stress levels have increased proportionately.

This YouTube video has some startling information about obesity in the United States and some great common sense tips on how to deal with it.

Although calorie counting is not the only consideration for food addicts who want to lose weight and heal their food addiction, simplicity seems to work for everyone.

Weight Loss Becomes More Challenging With Age

It gets harder to lose weight as we age. Habits that were formed in earlier years, even a few years earlier, can be difficult to break.

Food addiction forms habits, like overeating, eating when you’re feeling angry, tired, or depressed, and eating when you’re stressed. Since feelings are linked to compulsive overeating, just changing what you eat isn’t enough.

It starts out simple enough. Go to bed a little later each night. Snack while waiting on hold too long. Trade in your daily walk for hours in front of the TV. Eat when there’s nothing better to do.

Normal aging changes the body. Things slow down. What we used to be able to get away with doesn’t fly any more. We don’t burn fat like we did when we were younger, so those few extra pounds are harder to lose.

It’s hard to get your weight back to normal, whatever that means, until you get yourself back to normal, whatever that means. Normal is up to you.

We all get older. There’s no way to stop that. But you can teach an old dog new tricks. If you want to beat a food addiction, you need to learn a few new tricks.

1. Think of yourself. Make yourself important enough to put first. Pamper yourself with non-food treats as often as you can afford to. It may be a new experience, but it’s a good one.

2. Make eating a one-of-a-kind event. Don’t mix it with something else like talking on the telephone or watching TV, or driving.

3. Get out of the house. Go for a walk, even if it’s at one of those warehouse stores. Swing your arms and stretch out and move your body. Leave your money in your car.

You don’t have to do everything at once. It doesn’t work anyway. Take one new thing at a time, and work on it until it becomes a habit.

There is no reason in the world why someone in their 40’s, 50’s, or older can’t have a body they’re thrilled with, no matter what anyone tells you about getting older.

You just have to be ready to do the work.  When you are ready, you can change your life from one of that is ruled by food to one that is ruled by you.
